  10.            To understand  the Bible properly it is necessary to approach
  11.      and interpret its contents in  a sound and  consistent  manner.  To
  12.      assist  you in this process, the following guideline is recommended:

  15.       «First.» Intend to  be a student.  No lesser intention  will ever
  16.        produce any good result.
  17.  
  18.       «Second.» Concentrate  on the details.  Note what  the words say,
  19.        and not what you suppose they say or would like them to say.
  20.  
  21.       «Third.» Ask  yourself questions!  And  don't expect  all the an-
  22.        swers right away!  (This requires a healthy dose of humility.)
  23.  
  24.                      "Where'er you look within this book,
  25.                      Five things observe with care:
  26.                      OF WHOM it speaks, and HOW it speaks,
  27.                      And WHY, and WHEN, and WHERE."

  29.       «Fourth.» Put the parallel narratives together: not just the four
  30.        gospels, but also Kings and Chronicles.
  31.  
  32.       «Fifth.» Always have the question in mind: "What does this remind
  33.        me of? "  Have an eye out for "types" everywhere (but be careful
  34.        not to get carried away to the exclusion of the plain lesson).
  35.  
  36.       «Sixth.» Distinguish the difference between "true principles" and
  37.        "uncertain details".  Don't major on minors, or vice versa.

  39.       «Seventh.» Let the  Bible define and  explain its own terms, fig-
  40.        ures, and symbols.
  41.  
  42.       «Eighth.» Give every  passage a literal construction,  unless its
  43.        own connection and phraseology  render such a course ridiculous,
  44.        by bringing it into  collision with truths elsewhere established
  45.        by clear and positive language.
  46.  
  47.       «Ninth.» When  reading  articles  and  books that use portions of
  48.        Scripture to support their views, give  careful consideration to
  49.        the  complete Bible  context in which the extracted  passage has
  50.        been taken.
  51.  
  52.       «Tenth.» No doctrine  should  be built upon  one isolated text of
  53.        Scripture.  Any  true doctrine  will be found  scattered through
  54.        the whole Bible.  Select all the related texts in the Bible, put
  55.        them together,  and you will have all the truth revealed on that
  56.        particular subject.

  58.       «Eleventh.» Never be afraid of results to which you may be driven
  59.        by your investigations.
  60.  
  61.       «Twelfth.» Pursue your study of the Scriptures with as much inde-
  62.        pendence as if you were the only one concerned.  In other words,
  63.        do  not let others  discourage you  from doing what  you know is
  64.        right.
  65.  
  66.       «Thirteenth.» Rely on no authority less than Divine.
  67.  
  68.       «Lastly.» Prove all things: hold fast to that which is good.

  108.           scripture,  it must be searched and known by other
  109.           places that speak more clearly.

  115.        The Bible should be  studied at least as laboriously  and
  116.        exactly as  any other  book  which has  to be  completely
  117.        mastered.  Every expression, every word, must be weighed;
  118.        patiently,  thoughtfully,  systematically, reverentially.
